About genuine Cowichan Indian Sweaters

Few products today truly qualify for the term handcrafted. A genuine Cowichan Indian Sweater does, and remains virtually unchanged in its method of construction for about the last 100 years. After all, why change something that looks so good and works so well?

A genuine Cowichan Sweater is always recognized by its raw and unprocessed wool. The colours are natural shades of white, grey and dark brown.

The raw wool is first washed to remove dirt and foreign matter, but leaving in as much natural lanolin oil as possible. It’s the oil that makes it so water resistant. Next the wool is spun by hand – a difficult and time-consuming job.

Finally the wool is knitted into sweaters, toques, mitts, socks etc.
